Dr Kevin Deegan-Krause is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Wayne State University. He received a B.A. in Economics from Georgetown University in 1990 and a PhD in Government and International Studies from the University of Notre Dame in 2000. His research in comparative politics emphasizes European politics, political parties, democratic institutions and national identity. His first book, Elected Affinities: Democracy and Party Competition in Slovakia and the Czech Republic, was published by Stanford University Press in 2006. The Structure of Political Competition in Western Europe, co-edited with Zsolt Enyedi, appeared in 2010, published both as a Routledge book and a special issue of West European Politics, and he edited a special section of East European Politics and Societies on Political Parties in Eastern Europe. From 2011 to 2016 he served co-editor of the European Journal of Political Research’s Political Data Yearbook with responsibility for overseeing the digitization of the yearbook and its development as an interactive data-driven website. His other publications include a chapter on “New Dimensions of Political Cleavage” in the Oxford Handbook of Political Science (Oxford University Press 2007) as well as articles in the British Journal of Political Science, Party Politics, the Journal of Democracy, East European Politics and Societies, Communist and Post-Communist Studies, Nations and Nationalism, Politics and Policy, East European Politics and chapters in a variety of edited volumes. He is the recipient of the Truman and Fulbright Scholarships as well as of IREX Individual Advanced Research Grants. He has served as a consultant for the U.S. Department of State on the politics of central Europe. His ongoing research focuses on the transformation of political parties and he is working with Tim Haughton of the University of Birmingham on a book entitled “The New Party Challenge: Cycles of Party Birth and Death in Europe and Beyond.”
