As UNHCR statistics generally rely on data from host countries, statistics on refugees alone can give an insufficient account of refugee numbers, as some host countries will not grant refugee status to certain groups. Including statistics for individuals in refugee-like situations is an attempt to account for unrecognised refugees and does not include internally displaced persons. Statistics for stateless refugees are included if available.

The America Team for Displaced Eritreans is a small all-volunteer NGO based in the USA which provides information about, and assists, Eritrean refugees around the world. The America Team has on its web site (EritreanRefugees.org) extensive information and background about Eritrea, its refugees, and the causes of flight from the country. The NGO often gets assistance from UN, NGO and other sources, to refugees in crisis situations in various countries to where they have fled. The organization may be able to provide information specific to asylum cases, upon request. The America Team works to create awareness among the media, government offices and non-governmental organizations, about the plight of Eritrean refugees.
